HDR Efex Pro isn’t really difficult to understand, downloading its User Guide is one of the smartest ways of making significant progress with the app. Whether you’re working with a single image, or a series of bracketed photos, HDR Efex Pro handles them very perfectly. Having installed the app, HDR Efex Pro grants you unrestricted access to its wide range of tools and features. HDR Efex Pro fares well with TIFF and JPEG it requires the plugin-in host for a more thorough handling of the other file formats. Its standalone version, however, isn’t very flexible with the numerous file formats available. By design, HDR Efex Pro is primarily configured to function in tandem with any of the previously mentioned plugin hosts.
The app features a plug-in option for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture. Installing HDR Efex Pro is pretty simple. Like every other software program, installation is usually the first required step. They include Nik’s HDR Efex Pro, Macphun’s Aurora HDR and a lot of others. There are now several HDR imaging application with varying capabilities in the market. It’s no doubt that the technology has indeed come to stay, and for many years to come. Many professionals in the industry have taken advantage of this advancement and produced remarkable HDR images of exceptional quality. The technique focuses on enhancing both the perceivable highlight and shadow details of an image in order to create a more balanced exposure and, ultimately, a better overall dynamic range also known as the High Dynamic Range. The actual program slider controls are also named appropriately to what they do, so I would say the user manual is kind of similar to your car user manual - i.e. The Pro 1 manual is pretty brief it is more a short 20-page slideshow than a real manual. The Pro 2 panel structure and sliders are a little bit different to 1 and an import dialogue was added for things like ghost-reduction, but there's enough similarity that you will get a good way to understanding what does what. The interface and functionality did evolve from 1 to 2, but it is still the same basic tool being described. Looking at the sample, it looks like it should be good, but I do not know it.Īlso, is a guide written for Pro fairly usable with Pro 2? Of course, I know I'd end up printing it because I'm such an old-timer. If you don't have Photoshop as the host, then obviously you are much more reliant on U-point (which is not masking as such) for your local work within the image. If I am honest about how I use HDR Efex, I actually tend to simply grab the preset I like the most on a per image basis, and then do the further work back in CS5, and that's where I do my local stuff and masking by blending back with the original EV shots at differing opacities. You can get some good clues - once you have HDR Efex installed - by just clicking through the presets and observing how each of the sliders moves and the resultant combined effect of the sliders in the image. Of course there's also just experimenting.

I suppose I did also know some things from other books I also have on HDR in general, but those are often Photomatix centric, and cover the full work-flow from shooting brackets through to further post-processing in Photoshop. I think I learnt mostly from the video tutorials (on Nik's site) I bought the above book somewhat later and was more using it to put all the suite tools into context. If you were getting Nik's full suite then I would say it is worth to have. Even though it is two useful chapters, I am not sure I would recommend the book if you are only getting HDR Efex.
There is also one chapter on U-Point (Nik's unique technology for making your adjustments apply to some local area). HDR Efex Pro 3.0 (!!) is one chapter (30pages) in that. There is one for HDR Efex Pro 1 on the Nik site (under previous user guides). Not sure there is one for HDR efex Pro 2.
